National Committee

The National Committee will be made up of six young people from across Aotearoa. This committee represents both a board for decision making and a working group to support that Climate Challenge's programs, with tasks including:
  • Creating strategies and making decisions which support the future of the Climate Challenge
  • Ensure the financial security of the organisation, and wellbeing of all people involved in the Climate Challenge
  • Support the local conference committees to carry out the Climate Challenge conference program
  • Develop future programs

The average time commitment for a member of the National Committee is five hours a week, as well as a bi weekly online meetings, and monthly meetings with local committee members in their work area. It is vital that members can commit to this before applying. Where possible these members are encouraged to attend a local committee’s hui to connect with and support Local Committees running the conferences. This role has a term of a year, with the chance to reapply for sequential years at the end of a term. Please be aware of this commitment and be willing to fully commit before applying.

Members of this committee will attend a four day overnight hui during early December in Wellington - travel and accommodation provided for those out of town. This hui includes skill development workshops, planning, initial actions, and the opportunity to get to know other committee members. A mentor from Generation Zero or another partner organisation who has experience in the role’s area will support each member throughout their term. The Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator from each local committee will also attend this hui.

The National Committee will be made up of members who represent the following roles:
​

National Director (filled)
Oversees operations and strategy at a national level, working with the National Committee to create new strategies and ensure they are implemented. The National Director supports National committee members to carry out their roles, plans and manages meetings and hui, and works to connect all aspects of the Climate Challenge programs. They will also support and mentor local coordinators.

Education Coordinator (filled)
Designs and leads the Climate Challenge’s new high school education program. This includes  carrying out research, working with experts and young people to design resources and working with schools and other stakeholders to have them rolled out in educational settings. This role includes designing workshops for conferences.

Conference Coordinator
Support local committees to plan and run conferences across the country. This includes redeveloping the resources local committees receive (ie handbook, drive), planning and attending local hui, working with local leaders and ensuring teams are on track with goals. This role will include weekly calls with local leaders, and coordinating monthly cross team online meetings. The conference coordinator will work closely with other members of the National Committee to ensure local teams are fully resourced. This individual needs to have been involved in the Climate Challenge Conferences previously and have excellent communication and organisational skills.

Finance Coordinator 
Manages the finances of the Climate Challenge. This includes creating and tracking budgets, with advice from the National Committee, and working with local teams to help them understand their budgets. The finance officer manages ingoing and outgoing invoices, ensuring money is paid back in a timely manner and receipts kept correctly for auditing. This individual should have experience in accounting and excel. 

Public Relations and Design Coordinator 
Responsible for social media content and the monthly newsletter. This includes collating attendee’s success, upcoming opportunities and general climate change news. They will also use existing designs to create templates for posters and social media posts. This individual should be a great written communicator and ideally should have experience using Photoshop, canva and social media.

Filmmaker
Making films for education program, social media content, conference promotion and about conferences. A video camera and all extra equipment will be provided, and subsidies may be made for the cost of editing software. Please attach or link an example of your previous filmmaking, and explain your role in the production.
